CUSTOMER OF THE WEEK - PRIYA

Priya says that the blouses I make for her are admired by her friends in US where she stays.  She always comes back to me with more compliments and more blouses to be made for her, each time she visits India. She has come down for her second delivery and she is enjoying her motherhood now. Her entire family gets their clothes made with me. Hence, it is a tough competition to make new ones and not repeat the ones already made in the family. Nevertheless it is fun being innovative.

She is seen wearing a green blue combination silk sari. It is a double color combination, so I have brought the same effect on her blouse too by making the centre in blue and the sides in green. The pattern has been highlighted by using an embellishment which is a stones border. The edge of the centre of the blouse is cut into a v shape to give the effect of a corset being worn on sari.

Ruvanthika is dressed up as a Cindrella in a new avtaar. She has participated in a fancy dress competition and has won many good reviews for her dress. She is indeed looking gorgeous. Her mother, Nalini Karnna has sent me her pictures and informed me about the response she got in her school. It is nice to get the feedback from clients as we thrive on such information and of course the word of mouth does wonders to my business. Thanks to you for reverting and sending me her pictures. I would like to reciprocate your kind gesture by gifting you with a coupon from the sponsoring site http://www.mymemories.com/ The coupon code will be sent to your email id and you can download the digital scrapbook software for FREE. Hope you have lots of fun making use of it.

Her dress is made out of green netted fabric. It was a regular salwar dress material which is in the form of a set which means it includes the top material, salwar material and the dupatta. I have made use of all these fabrics together to give her an indo western look. The top jacket was made plain and embellished with silver star sequins. The dupatta is converted into a puffed up skirt with two layers to give the effect of a ball gown. The laced material which is supposed to be the kurtha material has been used to make an overcoat that has been enhanced with a stone border on its edges. The bottom salwar material that is plain has been used as a lining for the whole costume.

Jeweria whom I call as Juhi is a tall and pretty girl. She is so tall that each time I take the tape to take the measurements for her shoulder, I am left wishing that it was me in her place. Nevertheless, I am happy for her. She brings her clothes for tailoring and I enjoy giving her that trim and proper fit as it suits her petite body frame. In the first picture you can see her wearing a black bandhej dress in silk with chiffon sleeves that has been embroidered in threadwork. The second picture she is seen wearing another bandhej dress in silk which is wine and beige color in combination. She has a gorgeous smile, don't you think so?!

Bandhej is an art that is part of India's culture and heritage. It is the highest form of textile expression in dyeing and is also known as bandhini meaning to tie. When the threads are removed and the cloth stretched out, the areas which had been covered with thread will appear as different colored circles, square or diamond shaped patterns. Silk fabric with fine bandhini work is often worn as bridal attire by certain communities. The ciites which are famous for this kind of dyeing are Jamnagar, Bhuj, Jaipur, Udaipur, Ajmer and are situated in Gujarat.

La Princesse would like to gift you with a special digital software that can assist you in making your own calender, album or a photo book and many other things. To claim this, you can visit the sponsoring site http://www.mymemories.com/ and use the code sent to your email id. to download the software for free. Shailaja's Query Answered

Delicate fabrics with stains need to be rushed to dry cleaners. For the ball pen mark on your outfit, you can soak the spot with eau-de-cologne. Rub it with a coarse dry cloth. Wash as normal. Soermetimes clothes worn over a longer period of time will smell of perspiration even after you have washed them. Soak such clothes in salt water solution for an hour or sponge the spots with a solution of half a cup white vinegar to one cup of water before washing. If the stains become old, they will become stubborn and it is difficult to remove them. The solution to this is to get the outfit dyed and renewed into a new shade preferrably the color of the stain.

Dr.Archana used to come and get clothes done with me when she was studying in school. Then we lost touch and it was an indeed pleasant surprise when she suddenly dropped into my store with her mother, Mrs.Vasanthi. It was a great pleasure especially when I see my old clients remember me and come back to me. She has settled in UK and visited me to get her wedding trousseau ready. I made some lovely saris and ethnic blouses with halter neck in gold, silver and black that can go with most of her saris.

The dress she is wearing in the first picture is a rare combination of wine and aqua color made in Kora Silk fabric. The dupatta is heavily embroidered and the edges are with a crochet border dyed in the similar shade of the dupatta which is in a georgette fabric. In the second picture, she is wearing a complete black silk set which is set off with ethnic embroidery in bright colors. The dupatta has been given in a contrast shade with a shimmer brocade edge to it.

As a thanksgiving, we have a gift coupon using which you can download a very interesting digital scrapbooking software. To claim your gift coupon kindly visit http://www.mymemories.com/ and use the promocode enclosed herein: STMMMS14201

Baby Diya is six months old. She reminds me of the Murphy Baby of yesteryears that used to come on calendars. She is very friendly and always has a smile on her face. I enjoyed making this dress for her and it was indeed a great pleasure to click her pictures as she was very much obliging in giving her own poses.

She is wearing a green silk pavadai set that is traditional and yet contemporary in style because of the pattern. Noodle straps have been attached to the top and though the outfit seems to be as a two piece set,  it is designed as one piece. The skirt portion is attached from the upper part of the top and a zip is provided at the back so that it can be easily put onto her. The straps and the edge of the top are embellished with swarsoki stones and the body and the skirt portion has been embellished with tiny flowers made out of brass sequins.

CUSTOMER OF THE WEEEK

Regina has got a lehenga set designed at my store for her reception. She wanted it to be as glitzy as we can make it. Hence we have added stones and zardozi with plenty of gold color sequins. Each brocade panel in the skirt is filled with sequins and stones. The edge of the skirt is enhanced with a zardozi border with red stones to highlight the multi color lehenga. The lehenga has panels of brocade cut in multi colors and stitiched together to give a flared effect to the skirt.
The mustard color choli has been designed with a deep neckline and a string with gold color zardozi hangings attached to it. It is a back open choli and the blouse sleeves and the neckline is enhanced with a beadswork border. The dupatta is in green georgette benares fabric with zardozi border on all four sides of the edges. Matching motifs have been made and attached to the dupatta with golden color sequins interspersed in between to give a glamorous look to the outfit.

Mary is from Nagaland. She came along with her friends who referred my store to her. She is a  petite and very soft spoken girl. She always has a smile on her face and is very friendly. She is wearing the sari attire for the first time.

The sari is a pastel peach netted one worked with golden sequins. She is wearing a shimmer skirt  so that it can add glitz to her sari. The blouse is also made in a shimmer fabric and the design is inspired by the 70's look. The blouse is designed with a big bow and a deep V neckline at the back to add that vintage flavor to the contemporary look.

Archana is a regular client of mine who is getting her trousseau saris ready. She is a Dentist by profession and is sporting enough to model the saris designed by us for a magazine shoot at La Princesse. She is wearing a silk sari in electric blue shade with kalamkari border and a big peacock motif in the centre of the pallu. The kalamkari painting is then worked with brass sequins and zardozi work.

In the olive green sari, we have designed antique zardozi embroidery with cutwork. Though the sari fabric is not very expensive but the work done on the sari turned it into a designer one. That is what she said when she saw her sari worked with embroidery. She and her sister Anjana are a treat when they come here with their mother who loves embroidery works and they all look like three sisters delighting over the designs that are being shown to them. It keeps our creative moods always on the high to churn out some unique designs for them.

Judy is wearing her wedding gown designed in my store. It is made out of pure white satin and glass tissue. There is an overlapping of glass tissue in the skirt which is enhanced with pearls border at its edge. The bodice is also embroidered with white silk thread upto the neck line level which was left sheer. Further on the bust portion is embroidered with white silk thread and white pearls interspersed with few silver crystal sequins.
Judy was very sure at the outset that this is how she wanted her gown to be designed. She had come with her fiance and both of them patiently awaited the outcome of the dream dress for the bride. I gave her three trials for her dress and each time she returned back much happier. She has sent me her pictures as a token of appreciation. Aarthi is wearing a similar sari designed in the Kalidar style but it is custom made for her in antique beige and wine combination. This was specially made for her Mehendi function. She looks stunning in this sari and it is nice to see a professional doctor dressed fashionably. Kudos to her for being able to carry it off so well. Aarthi is enjoying a phase in her life when she is enjoying marital bliss. May God Shower His Blessings upon the new couple and keep them both happy always.
I would like to share an interesting aspect about Aarthi. She is fascinated by pastleys. Her trousseau had almost all her clothes using this motif. It was a pleasure to design her blouses and saris with embroideries wherein the mango motif was liberally used. The most interesting aspect is that she had her wedding decoration and the wedding invitation card too incorporated with these motifs. I enjoy designing her clothes and it is a great pleasure to design something different always but with the basic mango motif. That has become her signature style.

Vilasini and Karthik are a lovely couple and make a very nice pair. They spread cheer whenever they visit my store and here is wishing them lots of happiness together.

How to dress up in your 30s

When you are in your 30s, you are matured enough to know which style of clothes get you compliments and which you need to avoid. At this stage in your life, you also can afford to spend on clothes because you may either be a home maker or working in office. You will have money to spend on your wardrobe. Neatly tailored and sophisticated clothes should be your forte. Colors can range from bright colors to mid tones. The silhouettes can be smart that highlight the good features in your body. Use brocade bags with fancy handles or a nice fancy broach for that glamorous look. Wear your footwear in the form of stilletoes or platform heels. For jewelry, wear an elegant watch and a kada for your other hand. Neck pieces can be simple or avoided if you are wearing long earrings that stand out with your outfit.

How to dress up in your 20's

Teen age and the early twenties is an age to experiment and explore. Wear anything with an attitude and it is acceptable. Funky accessories like colorful bangles, fancy hair clips, bandanas, stoles and scarves will be the favorite of these youngsters. Skinny jeans with tight fitted tees and also T - shirts with messages written on them are trendy. Capris, harem pants, shorts, dhoti salwar, patiala, afghani salwar and churidhar can be worn with kurtis. The kurtis can be worn short. Indo western styles are easily adapted by girls in their 2o's. With regard to bags, fabric bags with broad slings worn across the shoulder make them look rebellious and fun loving. Wedges, cindrella shoes and casual flats in colorful hues make them appear cool and casual.

If a color bleeds on a garment, the best thing to do is to wash it separately or dry clean it the first time. Follow the instructions on the label. Before washing clothes, make sure the dark clothes are separated from the light colored ones. Wash them separately so that stains can be avoided on the light colored fabrics. You can put salt in water while washing. This will help in reducing the clothes from bleeding. The next alternative is to use vinegar to prevent the clothes from running color. Both these techniques can be easily done at home. When you buy new clothes, check for the instructions label on them before deciding on the technique you can use for washing. Do not put clothes in washing machine when the instruction says handwash. Use cold water where specified and warm water when it is necessary. Prevention is always better than cure. Hence make sure you take care of your clothes before they are subjected to washing.

What is Pico?

Shawls and Scarves need to be stitched with pico. Pico is a kind of stitch which is machine made. The thread follows a zig zag fashion and rolls up the fabric. There is a tendency for the scarve or the shawl to curl up at the edges. Hence if a size needs to be maintained constantly, it is not possible. Generally a three piece salwar set will have a shawl that needs to be picoed. At times, a stole worn over a western dress is also picoed to give a finished look to the edge. Pico can be done in various colors to match the fabric. The next alternative is to use a transparent thread that can match any color of the shawl. There is a technique known as flat pico wherein the part that stitches the edges of the shawl uses a flat plate known as the single horse. This gives a smoother finish and is very thin at the edge. Yet the wave cannot be dismissed because any fabric that is pulled across on the bias side will stretch slightly. Pico is different from tailoring clothes. It is a technique of embroidery.

How to get rid of stains on your clothes

There are various types of stains. Some are temporary stains that easily leave when washed in cold tap water. But there are some stains that become stubborn and it is difficult to remove them from the garment. First analyse what kind of stain it is. If the stain is that of tea or coffee, it can be washed off with soap and water. If there is a blood stain that has dried, then add some ammonia to the water used for washing. By chance if you sat down on a chewing gum, pour alcohol all around the stain. Repeat the same on the backside of the dress. Once the chewing gum hardens, you can peel it off the dress. Sometimes you will find an oil stain, for this you need to dip clothes in a solution of washing soda in hot water and clean with soap. Alternatively, you can also rub talcum powder or chalk into the stain. Place cloth between two layers of blotting paper. Press with warm iron.

Beach Wear

Some people go dressed up to beach as they may go to visit a function. It is very important to remember that when you go to beach, it is purely for having a breath of fresh air and relaxing. Hence your clothes should be comfortable and casual. Avoid wearing heavy jewelry that you may have to regret when you lose it. Your footwear has to be comfortable as you will be walking over sand. If you intend to get your feet wet in the beach water, then it is preferable to wear plastic footwear that can be easily washed clean once you are back home. Wear clothes like capris with tees or a synthetic salwar set that might dry soon if you have got yourself wet in the water. Avoid wearing jeans as the denim fabric takes a long time to dry when wet.

College Wear

College is the time when girls actually begun to become aware of the latest trends and keep themselves updated with the latest fashion. How to become aware of these styles is to read magazines related to fashion or watch movies and you can carry off a similar style. As a student, you need to feel comfortable in what you wear. Accessorize well, wear funky jewelry or carry a stylish bag and wear a cool urban footwear and you will soon become the talk of the college. Your clothes should be low maintenance like the digital tees, tunics, jeans, leggings, harem pants and knee length capris. Floral prints are in fashion. Wear cool hair accessories. Stoles are outdated, instead wear belts and large wooden bangles. An oversized handbag and a trendy footwear will complete your look. So girls, go ahead and make your own style statement.

Nithya's Querie Answered

Nobdy is perfect. We all know that even the models who walk the ramp have imperfect bodies or the problem of acne. But they all are trained to look good. In a similar manner, if we become aware of our shortcomings and our good features, we can try to highlight the best in us. Do not think you are fat instead call yourself as plus size. It is more sophisticated and elegant and also does not give the idea of a rolly polly person. When you respect and love yourself, others will naturally respect you. Like an echo, the thoughts reflect back and the Universe always says 'yes' to our thoughts.
When you wear clothes, opt for dark colors. Black is a slimming color. Since you are also tall, you can wear outfits with a break in color. Avoid wearing short kurtas and fabrics that will add bulk to your shape. Wear medium fitted clothes. If you have bulky arms, avoid wearing sleeveless tops and cap sleeves.

Monday, June 6, 2011

Office Wear

What you wear to office is very important. You can command respect or become a ridiculous joke if dressed inappropriately. You need to appear dignified. Wear well pressed clothes and keep your hair neatly pinned. Do not wear sleeveless clothes or plunging necklines. Avoid wearing mini skirts and tank tops. Your dress will enhance your profession. When you are well dressed, your confidence level is high and hence your production output is high. This will definitely bring you up in the eyes of the management and will lead to professional prosperity. Wear simple jewelry that does not make any sound. Carry a structured handbag that will give a good posture to you. Wear your footwear in a comfortable manner and wear heels to the extent you can manage.

Various Styles of Traditional Ghagra Sets

Have you heard these terms - ghagra choli, sharara, lacha and the gharara? They all sound similar but there is a difference between these styles. The lehenga choli is a long skirt worn with a choli like blouse. Sharara is a long skirt worn with a hip length blouse. Lacha is a long skirt worn with a knee length top. The gharara is a Pakistani style of dress in which the lehenga is divided into two parts worn with a top that ends above the knee level. The latest trends of the palazos, the culottes and the parallel have been derived from this style.

Various Styles of Skirts

Petite girls can opt for the bohemian style and the plus size girls can opt for the wrap around or the sarongs. The other styles of skirts are the A line, Umbrella cut, Panel cut, Mermaid, 3 Tier, Flounce, Asymmetrical,Pencil, Tube and the Column style. If you are on the plus size, avoid wearing a mini skirt but a mermaid cut will suit your body shape. If you are thin, you can wear gathered or pleated style, umbrella style and the tube style. Avoid wearing a mermaid style.

Saravana's Querie Answered

Designers must have an eye for the esthetic - a strong eye for color and details, sense of balance and proportion and an appreciation for beauty. Fashion designers need an excellent communication skill. Despite an advancement of the computer aided design technology in fashion, sketching ability remains an added advantage. A good portfolio - a collection of your best work - is very important as it is often a deciding factor in getting a good job.

Since you have completed your diploma in fashion merchandising and also been an assistant merchandiser in a company, the next step to go further is to get promoted to be a merchandiser and from thereon to be the senior merchandiser. For this, you need not study further, you gain experience as you work. As you move up the ladder, you will find yourself being promoted from a technical function to a management role. At this stage you can set up your own mini business or join one or two other merchandisers.

In addition to creativity, you need to have pattern making skills. This will enable you to give proper instructions to your team as to how the garment needs to be constructed. You can join a course in sketching and pattern making to gain more knowledge. All the best.

Test Your Skin Tone

Material Test : Hold two pieces of cloth, one silver and one gold, against your face. Check in the mirror which one looks better. You will find that one of the colors brightens up your face. If silver does, you belong to cool skin tone and if gold does, you belong to warm skin tone. If both the shades look good on you then, you have a neutral skin tone.
Vein Test : If the veins on your wrist are green in color, you have a warm skin tone. If the veins on your wrist are blue in color, then you have a cool skin tone.
Ear Test : You need somebody to help you with this test. If the patch behind your ear is yellow, you have a warm skin tone. If the patch is pink in color, you have a cool skin tone.

Know Your Skin Tone

We find some colors attractive but when we put them on, we may not get the best of comments. The reason being that we actually have chosen a wrong color for our complexion. Our skin tone will reveal the color category to which we belong. We can mix and match colors according to our skin tone, that is, we may either belong to warm colors segment or cool colors segment. Hence it is very important to know our skin tone so that we can enhance our outer beauty.
There are three methods in which we can determine our skin tone. They are:-
*Material test *Vein test and the *Ear test
Make sure these tests are carried out in natural light rather than artificial lighting.

Style Meter

  • If you are fair skinned, avoid wearing pastel colors. You can wear bright colors like fuschia, electric blue and red.

  • If you are wheatish in complexion, choose radiant shades in bright, warm colors. Dark colors are not the best choice because they can make your skin look dull.

  • If you are dusky skinned, you can wear ivory and earth colors like rust, brown, orange and yellow. Pink is the most ideal shade for your skin tone.

  • If you are dark skinned, wear pastel colors. Colors like white, blue and earthy orange will suit. Colors like emerald and yellow also should be your favorite colors.

Height makes a person feel conscious where they stand. But, it should not be the criteria for an inferiority complex. No one is perfect. Hence accept your short comings. With regard to the clothes, you can wear vertical striped clothes. This will create an illusion of being tall. Wear monochromatic colors and avoid wearing a break in color. Universe has solutions to all situations, wear heeled footwear, to the height you can manage and walk tall. Hope this has put a smile on your face.

Summer Fashion

As the mercury is soaring up, we need to bring out all our crisp cotton clothes. Pastel shades are best worn in this heat. Frosty colors like powder blue, baby pink, misty lavender, sea green and sunshine yellow are pleasant to be worn in this season. Cool and breezy is how our clothes should feel. Cotton absorbs moisture from the body and keeps the skin feeling cool and fresh. We must make sure that we are armed with the right clothes and accessories before venturing out in the heat.

Appearance is a powerful thing.

People generally may not remember what you have spoken at times. But they can tell you what exactly you were wearing. That is the power of visuals and colors. It is necessary to dress up but of course in a manner that is comfortable to you. It is not essential to wear a particular type of dress to please somebody else. You have to feel happy wearing what you are wearing. Your clothes set your mood by the color you choose to wear. Hence, by the choice of your color, one can say what mood you are in at the moment. Colors speak a language. For example the color red denotes dynamic. Yellow denotes cheerfulness. Orange denotes relaxed attitude. Green denotes loyalty, white denotes peace and so on.
