Many times people use words like Haute Couture or Prêt- a-Porter and Avant Garde. Have you ever given it a thought what all this jargon means? Well, these are terms used by fashion designers to categorize their garments. Couture is the art of dress making and Haute Couture is fashion created by the art of dress making. The clothes that belong to this category are one of its kind, hand sown and a perfect fit made to suit your body structure. In other words, these are clothes that are custom made especially for you. These garments are exclusively made for you and there will not be a repeat of the same design. Haute Couture is a French work and it means high sewing.
Prêt-a-Porter is ready to wear garments that can be chosen off the racks. These clothes are made in different sizes and may be less expensive because of the bulk production. The disadvantage in this category is that you will find several people wearing a similar dress in same colors. These garments are made in different sizes to fit different body shapes. Another disadvantage with this category of clothes is that you have to try your best to fit into a dress rather than the case of haute couture wherein the dress will fit onto you.
Avant Garde is again a French word that describes a garment to be unique. In the right sense these garments will be very unique and innovative that they will stand apart from the rest. These clothes will create a kind of drama when worn and attract attention. Vintage clothes also belong to this category and are unconventional. These clothes are ahead of their time and associated with the current arts that fight against the already known and accepted forms and traditions, suggesting a new revolution. Hence the clothes made in this category are rebellious.
